Bordeaux Margaux A sleeper of the vintage as well as the finest Boyd-Cantenac I have ever tasted, this opaque purple-colored Margaux offers a sweet perfume of acacia flowers, smoke, black currants, and foresty notes. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and pure, with outstanding equilibrium as well as noticeable, but well-integrated, sweet tannin, it will drink well between 2006-2018. Rated 88-89 Robert Parker Loads of smoke, toast and ripe fruit character. Good firm tannins, with a lively fruit structure. Lacks a bit midpalate. Score range: 85-88 Wine Spectator 2000 : If April and may were more rainy than the average, may, June and over all august and the first twenty days of September were hot. By the harvest, the grapes were very healthy, with characteristics similar to those of 1999 : high sugar content, good acidity, but more polyphenols. It was a rather precocious vintage, and the picking began on September 25th, till October 12th. It will count among the greatest vintages of the twentiest century. Created in 1754 by Jacques BOYD, of Irish origin, the estate was purchased by John Lewis BROWN in 1806, who was related to the Boyd family by marriage. Since the wines from BOYD-CANTENAC had been recognised and traded for a century, in 1855 the Château was classified Third Growth, in the Grand Cru classification of the Bordeaux wines. The estate belonged to the GINESTET family, once owner of CHATEAU MARGAUX, before coming to the current owners in the early 1930s. After the economic crisis which greatly affected the vineyards after the first world war, Pierre Guillemet brought BOYD-CANTENAC back to life in the sixties. Since, its wines regularly bring their contribution to the Art of Living and to the expression of the terroir of MARGAUX. Not following changing and short-lived fashions, BOYD-CANTENAC remains true to the style of traditional Margaux wines. More information at http://www.boyd-cantenac.fr/
