There are 4,000 bottles of the non-vintage L'Interdit de Valandraud, which Thunevin was not allowed to vintage date (it's a 2000) or designate as a St.-Emilion. A dark color and good attack are followed by a pinched, lean mid-section, and an austere, acidic finish. Perhaps I had a bad sample, but I did not find this wine exciting. Rated 85-87 Robert Parker

While most people were still under the impression that the world was flat, the Dutch were busy sailing to and from faraway lands in search of exotic cargo. From the early 1600s through most of the 1800s, the Dutch East India Company held a monopoly on the spice trade from Indonesia, Ceylon and the Spice Islands. Mercury Gin

Mercury Gin is made in England using the traditional pot still method. During the careful crafting of Mercury Gin the neutral spirit is charged with the unique combination of botanicals the day before distillation, so that they have time to rest. This mixture is then distilled again to produce a superior triple-distilled product. Contrary to the presently popular practice among some distillers of using a confusing number of botanicals, (as many as twenty) which tends to result in a unfocused taste, Mercury Gin is made with a few carefully selected botanicals and blended in a special formula. The all-natural botanicals used are Juniper, Coriander, Angelica, Lemon, Orris, Liquorice, Almond, Cassia and Orange. The spirit and botanical mixture is then distilled in the pot still, and the vapor condensed, leaving a high alcohol product. This is then brought down to 47% (US 94 proof) with the addition of de-mineralized water. The Final result of all this labor of love is the sublime Mercury Gin. It is know as a spirit of medium intensity of Juniper notes, with a sweet fruit character coming through on the initial nose. The tste is exquisitely soft and always smooth.

Grain alcohol is distilled twice at 196 proof in modern column stills to remove the congeners (by-products), creating a perfect alcohol base for this delicate gin. Ten herbs and botanicals are individually distilled in earthenware vats to create essential oils-almonds from Java, angelica from Eastern Europe and Asia, cassia bark from tropical Africa, coriander from Africa, cubeb berries from Sri Lanka, grains of paradise from South Africa, juniper berries from Italy, lemon from Spain, licorice from the Mediterranean and orris from Southern Europe. The essential oils are assimilated into the grain spirits in a centuries-old copper potstill over a coal fire. The cork is from Portugal. The distilling and bottling is done is Holland. The bands are made of 18 karat gold. Van Gogh Gin is distilled in Schiedam, Holland, the same city in which other fine spirits are produced. The distillery has been handed down from father to son for generations since 1891. It has been rebuilt under the supervision of the Holland Monument Society, including the windmill in front along the canal and cobblestone streets. Grain alcohol is distilled twice in a column still at 194 proof to remove the congeners (bad by-products). Additional distillation is done in a potstill at 176 degrees Fahrenheit to create a 120 proof gin, which is reduced to 94 proof. The coal-burning copper potstill holds 900 gallons, the first and last 100 gallons of the distillate are discarded, leaving only the heart of the distillate (ethanol) to be used for the gin. Herbs & Botanicals: Each herb and botanical is distilled individually in a small potstill with a high proof alcohol which creates a combination called "oil". Each "oil" is stored in separate earthenware pots. Before the third distillation, the Master Distiller measures each "oil" to be added to the alcohol in the potstill. The "oils" and the alcohol are redistilled together to create Van Gogh Gin.
