Cakebread Cellars' 2000 Napa Valley Chardonnay has a light straw color with a glint of gold. Its aromas are reminiscent of green apples and the faint scent of apricots. There is also the clean scent of mineral that some tasters would describe as being "flinty." On the palate, the flavors closely resemble those of the aromas, but with a very slight buttery finish as well as the subtle hint of vanillin from the French oak in the background. 2001 began with an unusually dry winter. The spring bud break experienced a bit of frost which lowered yields, resulting in more concentrated grapes with intense varietal character. The summer growing season was ideal, with no notable heat spikes, resulting in slow, even ripening of the grapes. Overall, it was a moderate to cool year, allowing for a long hang time, which resulted in rich, balanced fruit. To ensure that the grapes are gently squeezed and allow the natural fruit character to shine through, a gravity fed, whole cluster press pad is used for 100% of our Chardonnay to eliminate the bitterness that typically results from crusher-destemmers. The juice was then 100% barrel fermented and aged in 40% new and 60% prior use European, French, and American oak for an average of 8 months. Temperature was monitored not to exceed 65 F to produce a slower, cooler fermentation that enhanced complexities of body, flavor, and aroma. Fermentation occurred through a combination of wild yeasts found naturally on the grape skins and a Burgundian cultured yeast, CY3079. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation, lending it a buttery flavor that complements its crisp, clean finish. Frei Brothers Reserve wines possess a fruit-forward character with intense aromas and flavors that reflect the land and the climate that created the grapes. Our 2001 Chardonnay is big and intense with a soft mouthfeel and complex varietal characters of pear, peach and apple balanced with a subtle overlay of oak.

Kenwood Vineyards Yulupa Chardonnay was created in the early '90s to meet the growing demand for restaurant wine-by-the glass listings. The wine is made in a light, fruity style to pair well with a wide range of foods. Grapes for the 2000 Yulupa Chardonnay were harvested in mid-September after a long, cool growing season. Thirty percent of the juice was barrel fermented and aged on the lees in French and American oak barrels. A portion of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation to create a subtle round character. Chardonnay is the great white vine of Burgundy, far superior in quality and much more widely planted than its only other white contender, the Aligot�. While in the C�te d'Or it accounts for less acreage than the red Pinot Noir, and is very sparsely planted only in the northern reaches of the Beaujolais, Chardonnay dominates in the M�connais, where it yields an abundance of deliciously fresh and fruity wines. Thought to have originated in Syria and transported to Europe during the Crusades, Chardonnay is one of the most popular and widely-planted fine wine grapes in the world. This early-ripening variety does well in numerous types of climates, but it is generally agreed that the cool, chalky hillsides of Burgundy yield the most aristocratic and complex of all Chardonnays. While the greatest of Burgundy's Chardonnays are produced from the grand and premier cru vineyards of the C�te de Beaune, those from M�connais, Chalonnais and the outlying zones of the C�te d'Or are characterized by a unique crispness, elegance and finesse. Jadot Chardonnay is vinified and blended exclusively from Chardonnay grapes selected from the production of numerous growers in the C�te Chalonnais, the C�te M�connais and the Hautes-C�tes de Beaune, with a small proportion of superior village-level wines added in most vintages to improve the finished cuv�e. As such, it must legally take the "Bourgogne Blanc" appellation. Styled to be fuller in body and structure than most of Jadot's M�connais wines, it is partially fermented and aged in oak casks to add breadth to the ripe fruit notes. The lovely, elegant Chardonnay nose, offset by a gentle touch of vanilla, carries into excellent balance of medium-full fruit and acidity on the palate and a lingering finish.

Vintage Conditions 1999 was a variable year in South Australia due to high temperatures and low rainfall, although Penfolds policy of multi-regional blending allowed them to source parcels of fruit from areas, such as Piccadilly, that received good winter and spring rains and hence weathered the summer heat. Chardonnay was a standout for the vintage, with ripe grapefruit characters and great depth of flavour. A temperate growing season, followed by some hot days late in the season allowed for excellent maturity in 2001. The 2001 vintage was idea for Napa Valley Chardonnay, and particularly for the grapes grown in the southern part of the valley where Robert obtains his fruit. Well balanced yields and fully mature fruit provided Brittan with the essential materials to produce a beautifully crafted wine. Robert Brittan maintains a minimal handling philosophy when it comes to his winemaking. He employs traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques when making Chardonnay. A combination of whole cluster and de-stemmed fruit were pressed directly to 100% French oak barrels. Another dimension of complexity comes from aging on the lees for three to six months. Sur lies aging adds a richness and depth in the mouth and contributes to a long finish. This wine underwent 100% malolactic fermentation and was then barrel aged for nearly eight months.

Detailed Wine Information Appellation: Russian River Valley Vineyard Notes: The 2004 Russian River Valley Chardonnay is a blend of fruit from two Russian River Valley vineyards: Estate Drake Vineyard and Heintz Vineyard. Vintage Notes: For this blend, Bob selected hand-made French oak barrels, with medium-plus toast to highlight the flavors from each vineyard. This wine was aged for 16 months in Marcel Cadet French oak barrels and then bottle aged for 5 months. The barrels were 38% new oak, 13% one-year-old, 44% two-year-old and 5% three-year-old. Winemakers Notes: The perfume of caramel apples, Asian pears, honeysuckle and tangerine zest resonates in the aromas of this blend. Rich and lush flavors of Gravenstein apples, pears, minerals, cr�me caramel, spice and roasted almonds linger on the palate. Pleasant acids accentuate the exotic fruit characters that become affluent and creamy in your mouth. The silky fruit concentration finishes with a mineral quality.
