Antinori 2000 Solaia

Winemaker's Notes Intensely fruity and complex with a good structure, well-balanced, with soft tannins and a lingering finish. Displays unmistakable varietal flavor while retaining strong regional character.

Solaia, which means the 'sunny one' in Italian, is a 10 hectares (25 acres) southwest-facing vineyard planted 351-396 metres (1,150-1,300 feet) above sea-level on stony calcareous soil of marl and friable albarese rock. It is located at Santa Cristina, contiguous to the Tignanello vineyard, which is on the same property, in the Mercatale Val di Pesa zone of Chianti Classico. Antinori first produced a single-vineyard wine from these vines with the 1978 vintage (which was a limited release only in Italy); the initial blend was 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, which was repeated in 1979. During following vintages, 20% Sangiovese was introduced and small adjustments were made (according to vintage) to the proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc used, to arrive at today's blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc and 20% Sangiovese.

Winemaker's Notes
As a general rule, we eschew the herbaceous qualities that Cabernet Sauvignon can sometimes develop and focus more on up-front fruit and flavor intensity. The result is a more aromatic and forward wine, with rich, sweet black fruit flavors of cassis and blackberry. An earthy, dusty nuance adds complexity to the nose, and toasty oak and spice flavors linger in the balanced finish. Of particular note is the incredibly rich middle of our Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon: concentrated, fleshy and unctuous, complemented by elegant aromatic components and softness.

Arrowood 1999 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

This is a beautiful deep purple and ruby colored wine with incredible depth and flavor. While the nose is complex, with blackberry and plum fruit, spice and notes of cedar in the background, on the palate, the wine spills over with rich blackberry and cherry fruit flavors and cassis. The toasty oak and spice flavors combine to provide a wonderfully pleasing finish.

The wine is balanced with supple tannins and dense flavors. Finishes smooth with lingering toast and cherry flavors.

Winemaker's Notes This Chianti Classico exemplifies a modern approach to making this very traditional wine. Its a satisfying middleweight with good flavor intensity and well-balanced structure, wrapping classic flavors in a sleek package. It has enticing aromas of tart red cherries, saddle leather and a hint of pungent dried herbs. In the mouth, it delivers bright flavors of dried red cherries against the classic Tuscan background of leather and oriental spice. The finish is long and aromatic, with crisp acidity supporting the lingering flavor of red Michigan pie cherries. Theres enough silky tannin and firm acid to warrant cellaring for five or six years. Time in the cellar will soften the wines sharp edges and enhance its aromatic breadth and intensity, transforming the coltish charmer into a soft, sumptuous seductress.

Beringer 1997 Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

Vintage 1997 has already been recognized as exceptional within a decade of outstanding vintages, producing wines of deep concentration and rich tannins that promise longevity. The yields were generous, as were the flavors. Said vineyard manager Bob Steinhauer, "everyone seems to have focused on the size of the crop, but I've been more impressed with the quality. We saw spectacular fruit across the varietals." The grapes for this wine were harvested from September 12 through October 11.

His ultimate goal is a wine with a complex aroma, flavor and structural profile that layers the individual vineyard characteristics into a cohesive and balanced whole.

Cape d'Estaing 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon

Winemaker's Notes
The color of this wine is a dark, deep reddish-black, while the nose has mouth -watering aromas of chocolate, cassis and spicy oak. The palate reflects the nose with distinctive and typical cabernet flavors of cassis and mocha complemented by cinnamon-like spices and vanillin from the oak. The palate is firm but elegant with tannins fine-grained and adding to the lingering flavors. The wine was aged in predominantly French (67%) - balance American oak. We used 70% hogsheads and 30% barriques. 78% of the barrels were new and the balance once and twice used. This wine has a long life ahead of it, given good cellaring. It will show increasing complexity and roundness over the years. While it will go beyond 10 years, it will probably reach its peak by about 2008.

Caymus 2000 Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon

Winemaker's Notes
Color: Opaque, dark black-cherry

Nose: Deep, generous aromas of black currants (cassis) and black cherries that promise sweet, mature fruit, interwoven with notes of anise, black licorice and vanilla.

Mouth: The wine enters the mouth with an explosive impression of richly ripe fruit, especially black currants and plums. This pure fruit essence forms a solid core that dominates the wine in its evolution in the mouth. Flavors of licorice and toasted spice as well as textural elements from the finely grained tannins and plush, fleshy mouthfeel envelop this core but never overcome it. The fruit flavors deepen and expand as the wine builds to a prolonged, weighty finish. While this wine is delicious today, in my opinion it may not reach a plateau for 20 years or more.

The 2001 Caymus Cabernet is here! This is one hot vintage, the best we've seen since 1997 - jump on this one before it disappears. A classic Napa Cabernet that is a consistent top seller at wine.com. The color is a deep opaque ruby. The nose gives aromas of ripe, pure black currant (cassis) and black fruitthe characteristics we prize in Napa Valley Cabernetwith compelling notes of clove, toasted hazelnuts, and espresso-roast coffee beans. Subtle secondary notes of vanilla and toasty oak then fold in. The taste is a core of deeply extracted, lush berry fruit underpins the wine during its evolution in the mouth as other flavor layers emerge: bittersweet cocoa, creamy vanilla, cedar and a light touch of mint. The fruit and oak tannins are beautifully knit, reinforcing the overall impression of sweetness. The finish is long and deeply flavored, carrying through the layers of berry and spice notes predicted in the aromas.

The wine has substantial weight and grip, with silky tannins providing mid-palate sweetness and a lengthy finish.

One of the leading Pomerol properties and now run and administered by Jean-Pierre Moueix of P�trus and Trotanoy fame. It consists of just under 8 hectares of vineyards split in to two plots: the first is known as Les Grandes Vignes and is located on a gravel outpost next to the Church of Pomerol. The second plot lies on sandy, lighter soils and is to be found on the western side of the Pomerol plateau. The grapes (90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc) are hand harvested and then fermented in temperature controlled concrete vats. The wine is then matured in small oak barrels (50% new) for 18 months. It is bottled unfiltered. Latour � Pomerol produces sumptuous, meaty, concentrated and full-bodied Pomerols that often require at least 10 years of cellaring. In the context of other top class Pomerols they remain underpriced. "This is an excellent, forward, complex Pomerol with creamy opulence on the mid-palate and a complex nose of cedar, licorice, plum, black cherries, and a hint of herbaceousness. During the 19th century, the domaine belonged to the Arnaud family. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Arnauds founded the "Societe Civile du Chateau Petrus", the shares of which Madame Loubat began to acquire in 1925. By the end of World War II, Madame Loubat was the sole proprietor of Chateau Petrus. At this time the establishment of Jean-Pierre- Moueix, a company of wine merchants from Libourne, had the monopoly for its distribution. In 1961, Chateau Petrus went to Madame Loubats nephew and niece: Madame Lacoste and Monsieur Lignac. Since then, Jean-Pierre Moueix has bought Monsieur Lignac's shares. Under the direction of Jean-Pierre's son, Christian, and their oenologist, Jean Claude Berrouet, Petrus receives the care of a pampered child. The grapes are picked only in the afternoon, when the morning dew has evaporated, so as not to risk even the slightest dilution of quality. Vinification and aging: The composition of the topsoil and the subsoil at Petrus is almost all clay (whereas in adjacent properties the soil is a mixture of gravel-sand or clay-sand). Merlot flourishes in this soil and for this reason, Petrus' vineyard is planted with 95% Merlot. The vines are unusually old and are only replanted after they reach 70 years of age. Replanting takes place plot by plot, instead of vine by vine, in order to guarantee that the average age of vines is maintained at a high level. Fermented in cement vats, the wine is aged in 100% new oak barrels for 22-28 months. Clarified with 5 fresh egg whites per barrel. Never filtered for fear of removing some of its remarkable richness. Christian Moueix also owns the Dominus Estate in the Napa Valley of California.

Winemaker's Notes
Briarcrest is a fine expression of the rich, supple texture typical of Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. This particular vineyard block produces fruit with deep blackberry and black cherry flavors, and a distinct "briary" characteristic. In a poetic moment, our winemaker Margaret Davenport described "briary" as "the smell of very ripe berries on a hot, still summer day walking through a vineyard that abuts a blackberry patch, overlaid with a woody/herbal aroma."

Though Briarcrest is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the extended maceration produces a smooth, richly textured wine; varietal flavors intensify and tannins soften during this additional time in contact with the skins following fermentation. French oak adds notes of toast, tobacco and chocolate. Briarcrest offers thick black cherry and blackberry flavors, balanced tannin and oak in the mid-palate, and a long, smooth, expressive finish.

Briarcrest pairs beautifully with tenderloin of beef, marinated in a red wine reduction sauce. Try it with a succulent roast leg of lamb that has been brushed with rosemary or Dijon mustard.

Conn Valley 1999 Estate Cabernet Reserve

Winemaker's Notes
This wine is made from 100% estate grown grapes from our vineyards in Conn Valley. It is a blend of numerous clonal varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, each of which contributes to the character of the wine, with a small percentage of Merlot for added complexity. This vintage was aged for 19months in small French oak barrels in the caves on our estate prior to blending and bottling.

AROMA: Wild berries, blackberry, mocha, violets, sage and cigar box. TASTE: Blackberry, red currant, plum, clove, mint, white pepper, and dark chocolate with a rich mouth-feel, sweet, toasty oak and a long, rich finish.

d'Arenberg 2000 Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon

Winemaker's Notes
This large-scaled, classic southern Australian Cabernet Sauvignon can rival the world's finest Cabernet Sauvignons. Upon release, d'Arenberg's The Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep vibrant young deep red - purple colour. The nose shows intense blackcurrant fruit, cedary cinnamon spice barrel ferment & oak derived aromas, violet and mint scents as well as liquorice & chocolate smells. Primary Mulberry aromas are also evident on the palate. Combined with some blueberry, cassis and sweet rhubarb flavours dominating the typically rich & intense sweet, cedary middle palate flavours. These are followed by a typically firm but fine grained tannin extended texture overlaying soft plum and deceptively disguise the rich powerful cassis and and plum. The emphasis is on powerful full bodied varietal fruit flavour integrated with barrel fermented and matured oak in the cedary, smokey and cashew spectrum.

After time in bottle The Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon should gain more chocolate, truffle and cigar box and earth aromas and flavours. Nevertheless it should maintain its freshness, persistent flavour, linear acidity and varietal tannin hold. Mushroom, black Olive, Stewed Rhubarb and cooked Beetroot may also play a part. Varietal eucalyptus and bell pepper hints may also come to the fore but be well integrated with the other developing characters, maintaining an even palate weight with a seamless & persistently rolling length.

First planted in the late 1800's, our family's Frei Vineyard is situated in the cooler, Region III benchlands of the Dry Creek Valley. In this hillside location, soils are a combination of gravel, clay, and loam referred to as Manzanita and Suther series. The unique combination of climate and soil at Frei Vineyard yields red wine grapes with firm tannins, dense colors, and aromas and flavors of concentrated cherry, berry, plum, and spice.

Cabernet Sauvignon (99% of blend) grapes for this wine were predominately estate grown on our Frei Vineyard in the Dry Creek Valley. To intensity varietal character, shoot and leaf removal, cluster thinning, and hand harvesting were employed in the vineyard.

Louis Jadot Chardonnay

Chardonnay is the great white vine of Burgundy, far superior in quality and much more widely planted than its only other white contender, the Aligot�. While in the C�te d'Or it accounts for less acreage than the red Pinot Noir, and is very sparsely planted only in the northern reaches of the Beaujolais, Chardonnay dominates in the M�connais, where it yields an abundance of deliciously fresh and fruity wines. Thought to have originated in Syria and transported to Europe during the Crusades, Chardonnay is one of the most popular and widely-planted fine wine grapes in the world. This early-ripening variety does well in numerous types of climates, but it is generally agreed that the cool, chalky hillsides of Burgundy yield the most aristocratic and complex of all Chardonnays. While the greatest of Burgundy's Chardonnays are produced from the grand and premier cru vineyards of the C�te de Beaune, those from M�connais, Chalonnais and the outlying zones of the C�te d'Or are characterized by a unique crispness, elegance and finesse. Jadot Chardonnay is vinified and blended exclusively from Chardonnay grapes selected from the production of numerous growers in the C�te Chalonnais, the C�te M�connais and the Hautes-C�tes de Beaune, with a small proportion of superior village-level wines added in most vintages to improve the finished cuv�e. As such, it must legally take the "Bourgogne Blanc" appellation. Styled to be fuller in body and structure than most of Jadot's M�connais wines, it is partially fermented and aged in oak casks to add breadth to the ripe fruit notes. The lovely, elegant Chardonnay nose, offset by a gentle touch of vanilla, carries into excellent balance of medium-full fruit and acidity on the palate and a lingering finish.
