Many of Scotland's distilleries have stories of varying degrees of interest relating to their history. Aberlour officials will readily point out that in 960 A.D., St. Dunstan conducted his Baptismals in the spring of water that is now used for whisky production by their distillery. Judge for yourself as to the relevance, or contribution, that this information or act in history has on the single malt you will taste. Aberlour Distillery was founded in 1879 on the site of an earlier distillery built in 1826. It produces a full-bodied malt that is quite complex and spicy, with a classic bouquet in the nose. It is the only malt whisky to have won twice (1986 and 1990) both the Gold Medal and Pot Still Trophy at the International Wine and Spirit Competition.

| Aberlour a'bunadh is a natural single cask strength malt whisky. Taken directly from specially selected sherry casks it is bottled as simply as possible without the use of modern filtering methods or the addition of water. The three main characteristics that distinguish Aberlour a'bunadh from the other single malts are: Original Cask Strength means that the whisky is bottled at the strength of the cask, which in the case of the first batch of a'bunadh is 59.6%. Not diluted, the whisky possesses a greater aromatic complexity. Most malts of the old days were cask strength. Not Chill-filtered. Today most malt whiskies are chill-filtered to prevent the whisky becoming cloudy when adding water or ice. This process, which did not exist in the 19th century, removes some richness and mouth feel as well as some fruit and sherry character. Aberlour a'bunadh is a true replica of the old days' malts. Only the best Sherry Butts, which previously held oloroso, have been selected by Douglas Cruickshank, Aberlour's Distillery Director. These casks are the rarest and the most precious used for whisky maturation. Again, they were used in the old days when sherry was imported from Spain in casks which were then left empty sitting in UK ports or ships. It is presented in an elegant dark green gift carton carefully crafted using ancient die-stamping methods. The unique bottle recalls the traditional flasks used by locals in the 19th century to collect their precious whisky. A'bunadh (a-boon-akh) literally means "the origin" in Gaelic and is a toast to the forefathers of today's whisky makers, bringing back the true dimension of olden days Single Malt whisky. This is one of the rare, triple-distilled single malts--Benrinnes, Springbank and Rosebank being the only others. Auchentoshan is a very light-bodied malt, but it retains great character and complexity. It is an excellent malt to introduce the novice to the world of single malts. The great bulk of Auchentoshan goes into the blends. An interesting aspect concerning this distillery is that, even though it is classified as a Lowland distillery due to the physical location of the plant, it gets its water from the Highlands' Kilpatrick Hills located just north of the Highlands boundary line.

| (Pronounced "Ochntoshn".) This is the classic Lowland malt, triple-distilled, light, but with plenty of complexity and character to in its own right. The distillery is just outside of Glasgow, hidden in a hollow between the river Clyde and the Kilpatrick hills. In 1984 it was acquired by a private company, Stanley P. Morrison as a Lowland partner for its Islay and Highland distilleries, Bowmore and Glen Garioch. |
